Venice, Viareggio or Bagolino, which Carnival do you prefer?

There are several ways to celebrate Carnival in Italy, each one has its own style and custom.
All of them originate from historical traditions and what we admire during the Carnival festival is the result of a very long manual labour. The same happens here at Marinoni, where the objects are the fruits of the tradition and are handcrafted with love.

The Carnival of Venice

Let’s start from the most famous one, the Carnival of Venice. Carnival is commonly the time of the year where all society differences are leveled - people could even make fun of authority and aristocracy. Today’s Carnival of Venice attracts thousands of tourists every year from all over the world, they can admire and also wear the spectacular typical masks. We matched this Carnival style with the Marinoni baroque pewter charger as during the 17th century, the baroque carnival was a way to save the glorious image of Venice worldwide.

The Carnival of Viareggio

The Carnival of Viareggio tastes like the sea and the coming summer and it is characterized by the multicolored and irreverent floats. The serenity and quietness of the Tuscan sea make a contrast with the variety of bold colours of the political caricature. That’s why we combined it with the Marinoni pewter and glass pitcher, which is clear and simple yet suitable to serve multicoloured juices.

The Carnival of Bagolino

The Carnival of Bagolino is the one we know the best as it has its roots in the area of Brescia. It boasts ancient origins and its symbols are the “Mascher” (people wearing masks and costumes that are exact replicas of the old traditional male and female clothing) and the “Balarì” (masked dancers wearing white masks, wonderful traditional costumes and elegant hats). The Balarì represent the holy and aristocratic section of the society. Accompanied by the Sunadur (musicians), they perform suggestive folkloristic dances. The Mascher, by contrast, play the role of the joking, poor people; they also stage the simple and traditional old manual works. We thought the Marinoni object that better combines with the Carnival of Bagolino is the small pewter pitcher with crests which is an exact replica of the Dutch original one from the XVIII century.

Which is your favourite Carnival? Is there any other that better reflects your style?

Italian Castagnaccio recipe

With chestnuts we suggest to prepare this ancient, traditional Tuscan recipe: the Castagnaccio It has poor origins and there are no eggs or butter in it. This is not a puffy cake and probably children won’t like it, but taste it with fresh ricotta, it’s fantastic!

INGREDIENTS

  • 300 grams chestnut flour
  • 4 tbsp caster sugar
  • 1 glass plain water
  • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 1 handful of raisins
  • 1 handful of pine nuts
  • 1 Rosemary sprout

METHOD

Mix flour and sugar by sieving them, stir in water and olive oil. Add the raisins (that you previously soaked in water), the pine nuts and some fresh rosemary needles. Blend it all and put the cake butter into a tin. Bake at 180° for 30 minutes.

Tradition and playful ideas with Easter eggs

Eggs are one of our favorite Easter symbols: you will find them decorated, made of chocolate, hidden. So many are the traditions that passed through the ages and that are still popular nowadays. Eggs have been a symbol of spring since ancient times representing new life and nature re-birth.

Origin of Easter eggs

Easter eggs tradition has ancient roots, it dates back to pagan and mythological beliefs. Did you know that Egyptians considered eggs as the heart of the four universal elements: Air, Earth, Water and Fire?

It was common for Persians to give eggs as a present during Easter time. Later, especially during the Middle Age, the egg became more and more the symbol of new life, fertility and rebirth.

Easter is celebrated during the time when hens start laying eggs after the winter slow down: this is why children look for eggs hidden in gardens and fields in the contemporary traditions.

Decorating Easter eggs

Creative ways to decorate eggs are a fun way for kids to celebrate Easter but we bet adults will enjoy it too during the pic-nic or waiting for lunch time.

Easter eggs games

There are so many Easter party games that let your children hop, jump, skip and dance their way through this springtime celebration. Here are some of them:

  • Egg hunt. Probably the most traditional Easter game for children. Adults have fun hiding chocolate or decorated eggs while kids join the competition to find as many eggs as possible.
  • Egg roll. Each child is given a hard-boiled Easter egg. The object of this Anglo-Saxon tradition is to get the egg from the starting line to the finish line. There are several ways to roll the egg, did you know that the White House version allows the kids to push it with a spoon?
  • Egg tapping. In this game the two contenders hold a hard-boiled egg and tap each other egg with the intention to break the other's, without breaking one's own.
  • Egg dance. The tradition of the Easter egg dance is connected with the egg dance that was performed on an Easter Monday in the late 15 th Century, at the wedding of Margaret of Austria and Philip the Handsome, Duke of Savoy. The aim of the game is dancing on a floor where eggs are laid out, without breaking any. The game is also called hop-egg.
